Dental Implants
Are you missing one or more of your teeth? Whether you’ve lost teeth due to an injury or as the result of damage and decay, gaps in your smile can lead to a number of issues. The primary concern is often the aesthetic. Missing teeth can lead to a drop in confidence, and start to gradually impact your overall willingness to smile. Missing teeth also make it difficult to speak properly, and can also lead to bite alignment issues. Dental implants offer a natural and long-lasting alternative to other tooth replacement solution. Whether just one tooth or several teeth need replacing, the dental implant procedure can help to restore both your smile and bite functionality.

Options for Dental Implants
There are several oral health solutions that implants are designed to treat. The replacement of single and multiple teeth is the most commonly seen use of implants. Some patients opt to replace complete rows of teeth, for a smile that is uniform and completely natural looking.
Implant supported dentures are another use for these permanent replacement roots. Dentures that are supported by implants will be held fast in place. This allows patients to benefit from the stability offered by implants, without the higher price tag associated with a mouth full of implants.

What are Dental Implants?
Made from surgical-grade titanium, dental implants serve as a permanent replacement for the lost tooth root. The titanium post is surgically implanted into the jawbone, where it functions as the stable root base for a new prosthetic tooth, or crown.
Once implanted into the healthy jawbone tissue, the tissue will grow and fuse to the titanium post. A very small abutment that is attached to the top of the titanium post will serve as a means of securing the prosthetic tooth once the jawbone has been allowed to heal. The healing process can take up to several months. During this time your jawbone will be continually fusing to the titanium post.

Once the healing process has been completed, the artificial root will be ready for the placement of the permanent crown.
Are Implants a safe solution to missing teeth?
Dental implants are a great restorative dental solution for any patient missing teeth. Titanium does not erode, and will provide patients with a lifetime of reliability.
What happens during the dental implant procedure?
Our dentist will need to conduct a thorough examination of the area that will be receiving the tooth implant. X-rays may need to be taken in order to gauge the correct positioning for the titanium post, and to get an idea as to the severity of any bone regression if it’s present.
Patients will be numbed so that there is no pain or discomfort felt during the surgical implantation of the titanium post. Once the gum and surrounding teeth are numbed, the periodontist will surgically place the artificial root into the healthy jawbone. A temporary crown may be placed over the implant, to encourage healing and to ensure aesthetics are maintained.
After the titanium implant has been allowed time to fuse to the jawbone, it’ll be time to create the crown or the bridge. Once they have been milled, the prosthetics will be bonded in place.

Am I a good candidate for dental implants?
The majority of patients who have lost one or more teeth will be good candidates for the dental implant procedure. The major disqualifier for getting a tooth implant is bone regression but there are options to overcome this.
Bone regression occurs when there is no longer a tooth and tooth root system for the jawbone tissue to grow around. The bone regresses away from the gum line, and can lead to a number of other concerns. Bone loss can often be resolved with a bone graft. This will allow for sufficient bone tissue growth for the implant to be fused to.

The best way to determine whether you are a good candidate for dental implants is to have a discussion about your smile goals with your periodontist.
What are some of the alternatives to dental implants?
For patients who are not sure whether dental implants are the right choice for them, there are some other options that can help to restore a smile. A bridge is one option that some patients may consider if they have just a small number of teeth missing. A bridge is typically affixed to the healthy teeth on either side of the gap, and can restore both a smile and the functionality on that side of the mouth.
Patients who have a larger number of missing teeth may find that partial or full dentures are another consideration. Quite often the price of dental implants will dictate for some patients the type of treatments that they invest in.
