Root Canal Treatments

Do you have a tooth that is causing you a lot of pain? Perhaps you are experiencing sensitivity to both hot and cold? You just might have an infected tooth. While smaller cavities can be treated with a simple filling, if the decay is too advanced then root canal therapy might be your next best option. We would advise you to come and see us as soon as you can, the sooner we diagnose the cause of the pain, the sooner we can stop and prevent further damage and potential tooth loss.

Why get a Root Canal Treatment?

It’s important to note that root canal treatments can help to preserve your natural tooth. Saving the tooth with this procedure is a much better option than extracting it. Root canal therapy becomes essential when the pulp inside of your tooth has become infected as a result of damage or decay to the tooth.

Certainly, not all pain in or around a tooth is indicative of needing root canal treatment. There may be another issue responsible for the pain. Your dentist can help you to evaluate the pain and the condition of the tooth.

Root canal treatment will address an infection that is inside of the tooth and spreading into the root canals of the tooth. Treating this infection and repairing the damage caused by the decay can help to preserve the natural tooth structure, and help to avoid the need for an extraction.

What is a Root Canal Treatment?

It’s important to note that root canal treatments can help to preserve your natural tooth. Saving the tooth with this procedure is a much better option than extracting it. Root canal therapy becomes essential when the pulp inside of your tooth has become infected as a result of damage or decay to the tooth.
The pulp is at the centre of your tooth and consists of blood vessels and nerves.
Root canal therapy will remove the infected pulp and restore health and functionality to the tooth. Failing to treat the infection can lead to the infection spreading into the root canal system, result in an abscess formation and may spread to surrounding tissues.

Advances in dental technology, paired with the gentle treatment of our dentists, will ensure that your root canal treatment is a comfortable procedure. Root Canals are a common procedure and you will feel no discomfort or pain while you are getting the procedure at our clinic.

When is a Root Canal Treatment needed?

Treating this infection and repairing the damage caused by the decay can help to preserve the natural tooth structure, and help to avoid the need for an extraction.

What happens during Root Canal Therapy?

After performing a thorough examination of the tooth, and taking x-rays, your dentist will be ready to form a treatment plan. The tooth and the surrounding gum will be numbed with a local numbing agent. A protective dental dam will be placed around the tooth to isolate it and keep it clean and dry during the procedure.
A small opening will be made in the tooth, to remove the decay and the infected pulp. The canals of the tooth will be disinfected to remove all signs of the infection. The canals will then be filled with a biocompatible sealant that will seal the canals and prevent re-infection.
The crown of the tooth will then be filled with either a filling or a stronger restoration such as a crown or onlay.
