Inlays & Onlays
While your dentist will typically rely on fillings to treat the majority of the cavities on your teeth, sometimes fillings are simply not enough to restore a tooth that is has severe decay. A root canal treatment may not yet be warranted. The option that your dentist will then consider to replace the badly decayed or damaged tooth will be an inlay or onlay to restore aesthetics and functionality.

Lab-made protheses
Traditional fillings are handled in the clinic, in one visit. An inlay or an onlay will need to be made in a lab in order to get you the ideal fit. Once they are in place, they will offer an almost flawless natural look.
What are Inlays/Onlays?
If a tooth has suffered from too much damage or decay, it can be hard to restore function with just a simple filling alone. You will need to have sufficient healthy tooth remaining however. These tooth restoration solutions are a type of filling that will serve as a custom-made cover that slips over a larger cavity or larger area where a portion of the tooth is missing.
Why apply an Inlay/Onlay ?
Using an inlay or onlay can help to conserve more of the original tooth structure.
What to expect from the Inlay or Onlay procedure?
To start the procedure, your dentist will numb both the tooth and the gum around the tooth using an injected local anaesthetic. Once completely numb, the decay and damage will be removed. The tooth will be sterilized to ensure all signs of decay have been eliminated. An impression will then be taken, so that the laboratory can mill the inlay or onlay from that impression. A temporary filling will be set in place to further protect the tooth.
The finished product will be made from a tooth-coloured ceramic or composite so that it looks beautifully natural once in place. When you return to the clinic for your second visit, the onlay or inlay will be set in place.

Crown or Inlay/Onlay?
Getting fitted with an inlay or onlay is quite similar to the procedure for getting fitted for a crown. The key difference is that much less of the tooth’s natural structure is removed during the procedure.
When a patient is fitted for a crown, there may be a significant amount of reshaping done to the tooth in order to ensure that it fits well beneath the crown. The goal of using an inlay or onlay is preserve as much of the natural tooth structure, so they are best considered for those who can benefit from more conservative treatment strategies.

Inlay VS Onlay
While inlays and onlays are quite similar, there are some key differences to keep in mind. Inlays will fit within the cusp tips of a tooth, and onlays are a more extensive restoration extending over the cusps of the tooth being treated. Inlays are placed in the little points or cusps of a tooth, thus smaller. Onlays cover over one or more of the cusps, thus far larger.
Your dentist will help to determine which option is the best one to help you meet your tooth restoration goals.
