Teeth Whitening
Would you like whiter teeth? There is something so lovely about a beautiful healthy white smile. Did you know that 48% of people say they notice someone’s smile first when they meet them? At Forster Court Dental, we offer professional bespoke teeth whitening, come talk to us to see what we can do for you.
What are teeth whitening treatments?
Teeth whitening is the process of using an active ingredient, usually, hydrogen peroxide gel, to whiten the colour of the teeth. As the gel is broken down, oxygen enters the enamel and dentine, bleaching the coloured substances of the teeth.
Home tooth whitening – Your dentist will provide you with bespoke whitening trays and gels. These are worn for up to several hours overnight and will gradually lighten the colour of your teeth over the course of approximately 2 weeks. Unlike over the counter kits, our teeth whitening trays are moulded from models of your actual teeth and we use only products which are proven to be safe and effective. Be careful using DIY home kits without professional supervision, some cheaper kits can permanently damage your teeth and enamel.

What are the best teeth whitening treatments?
Professional teeth whitening is the best solution for targeting all types of stains on your teeth. Over-the-counter strips, gels and rinses can only achieve moderate lightening of the teeth. The solutions that your dentist will use will container higher concentrations of the whitening agent that is used to target those stains.
What types of stains can be treated?
There are two types of tooth stains:
Extrinsic – stains above the enamel
Intrinsic – stains below or inside the enamel
Extrinsic stains are caused mainly by the foods and drinks that we ingest. Coffee, tea, wine, tobacco use and many darker coloured foods and drinks can all cause extrinsic surface staining on the teeth. Under many circumstances, surface stains can be lightened, to some extent, through professional cleaning.
Intrinsic stains can be due to the composition of the teeth, the ageing process and also the same factors which cause extrinsic staining over a prolonged period of time. These deeper stains can be treated with professional whitening systems.
The length of time your whiter teeth will last depends on your diet. Darkly coloured foods and drinks can dull the appearance of your teeth over time. If this is the case, the benefit of your at-home whitening system means you can just use your trays and gels again to return to your brighter shade.
Professional teeth whitening is a simple, affordable procedure that can produce brilliant results for patients, in a relatively short period of time. The main advantage of tooth whitening is the increased confidence the patient will receive having a bright white smile in comparison to a discoloured one.
